The ‘One Blackpool-Connect’ project promotes responsible business practices; private sector assistance would encourage these businesses and help address the social issues within our local communities.

As Tesco’s Community Champion it’s my job to find ways to support the local community. Tesco’s Clifton Road store now has a 600 sq ft community room which is available to hire free of charge and we are working hard to help in whatever ways we can. Many of the private sector businesses I come across are willing to support the Third Sector and I believe that the One Blackpool-Connect Project is a great way to collaborate for the community’s benefit.

The ‘Connect to One Blackpool’ lottery-funded project is a great initiative. There is a pressing need for Third Sector organisations to improve their governance and forward planning by recruiting volunteer trustees from the private sector. Age UK Blackpool & District have benefitted greatly from a business strategist working for a national organisation and joining the trustee board in 2014.

I had never really applied for that level of grant funding before, it took a while to pull it all together, but I had some good support from our trustees. With help too from One Blackpool, we got the application finished and sent off. I recall the moment we got the letter. I opened it and after a moment of realising what it was, my heart leapt into my throat, I was so happy and grateful that the lottery had provided us with grant funding for a year to do this.

There are over 1500 people with visual impairment in Lancashire and this grant will help us to upgrade and enhance the equipment we use to audio describe performances. It will also fund training for more audio describers, and facilitate research with disability organisations to understand some of the key barriers to theatre attendance for the visually impaired.

We are all excited at Community Voice at the prospect of signing up to the One Blackpool e-Learning programme. It is an easy process to sign up to and allows us to take each module at our own pace. It allows us to get new skills and experiences and when completed a certificate/qualification which is recognised by employers.
We do hope to make full use of this opportunity and develop it within the Community Voice Group.
